The 6 shoes you need in your capsule wardrobe
And plenty of product links
Some of you know that I used to own a shoe company. I’d typically get one of every style and color we released and wound up acquiring enough shoes to fill out this closet:
At my peak, I think I owned about 75 pairs. Since then, I’ve edited my wardrobe down considerably. Fast forward to today: I’m traveling abroad and living out of a suitcase with just two pairs of shoes (sneakers and flats). One more pair would be nice (black leather boots), but I haven’t found “the one” and honestly I’m fine 🙂 . I am patiently waiting for the perfect pair. Editing down my wardrobe has been such a freeing experience. I love living with less. It requires extreme intention, which is what Extremely Edited (this newsletter) is about.
This particular post is about shoes, and more specifically the six styles I believe complete a capsule wardrobe and make it easy to get dressed for any occasion, especially your everyday life.
As we transition into spring, it’s the perfect time to take inventory of your wardrobe. Quick note: this post does not cover footwear for athletics or rainy/snowy weather. I can dive into that later if you want, lmk.
I'm curious, how many pairs of shoes do you own? |
1. TIMELESS SNEAKER
The first essential style is a nondescript sneaker. One that has either been on the market for many decades or isn’t identifiable as a specific brand. Tip: to elevate your look, remove any visible fabric labels (these little scissors are perfect). The sneakers I wear and am recommending to you are the antithesis of trendy thousand-dollar, chunky, embellished trainers.
2. LOAFER
Classics that have been around the block and stand the test of time. If they feel too preppy, try styling them with a frayed hem, vintage Levi’s, an oversized shirt/sweater, or messier/bigger hair (queue the dry shampoo).
3. CASUAL SANDAL
The comfortable, flat sandal you slip on day-to-day. One step above a Havaiiana (or indeed go with a Havaiiana if it’s not too casual for your lifestyle). The casual sandal goes with pretty much everything.
4. FLAT
For an effortlessly pulled-together daytime look. I think they work best with ankle-length pants (show a little skin between pant and shoe).
5. VERSATILE HEEL
This is the heel you can throw on with whatever you wore today, and all of a sudden you’re dressed for a dinner out. If fancy events are a part of your lifestyle, this shoe works with your formalwear.
6. STRAPPY SANDAL
It can be heeled or flat, depending on your lifestyle. This is the shoe you wear when neither the casual sandal nor the versatile heel feels right. It’s delicate and subtle. You might occasionally wear this shoe with formalwear as well as the versatile heel.
OK, LET’S SHOP . . .
These shoe capsule edits have varying levels of dressiness (though all are comfortable and walkable) and are offered in a range of price points.
